Bet365 Rolls Out Biometric Age Verification Across UK Platform Following Gambling Commission Pilot
Bet365 has become the first major UK operator to deploy mandatory biometric age checks on every login, replacing traditional document uploads. The move follows a six-month pilot with the UK Gambling Commission and is expected to set a new compliance benchmark ahead of stricter under-25 affordability rules.
Bet365 confirmed on Wednesday that biometric age verification is now live for all UK customers, requiring facial liveness scans at registration and periodic re-authentication for accounts flagged by behavioural risk models. The technology, supplied by Yoti and integrated with the operator's existing KYC stack, replaces the document-led process that has long been criticised for letting underage users slip through with borrowed credentials. Bet365 said internal testing during the pilot reduced confirmed underage account openings by 94% compared with the prior twelve-month baseline.
The rollout aligns with the UK Gambling Commission's evolving guidance under the post-White Paper framework, which has placed growing emphasis on frictionless but verifiable age assurance. Commission executive Andrew Rhodes welcomed the deployment, noting that biometric checks at session level — rather than just onboarding — close a gap regulators have flagged repeatedly in enforcement actions against tier-one operators over the past two years. Industry observers expect William Hill, Entain and Sky Betting to follow with similar implementations before the autumn.
The shift is not without controversy. Privacy group Big Brother Watch issued a statement criticising the normalisation of facial scanning for routine consumer activity, warning that biometric template storage — even when claimed to be ephemeral — creates new attack surfaces. Bet365 responded that all biometric data is processed on-device and discarded within seconds, with only a cryptographic hash retained for fraud correlation. The operator has also published a technical white paper detailing its data minimisation architecture, an unusually transparent step for the privately held company.
Analysts at Regulus Partners suggested the move is as much strategic as compliance-driven, positioning Bet365 favourably ahead of the Commission's expected consultation on mandatory affordability checks for the under-25 demographic, slated for Q3 2026. With regulators across Germany, the Netherlands and Ontario watching closely, the UK deployment may accelerate biometric adoption as a de facto global standard for licensed operators — and pressure suppliers serving grey-market jurisdictions to follow suit or risk losing banking partnerships.
